Holy Wednesday

Thoughts on Christ the Bridegroom, taken from an Orthodox website, and another from the writings of a Lutheran nun.

“Kontakion in the Fourth Tone

Though I have outdone the harlot in sin, yet I have offered You no shower of tears. Rather, I fall before You fervently kissing Your spotless feet, praying silently that, as Master, You will remit my debts as I cry: “Savior, free me from the foulness of my deeds!”

Reading:

Two women - say the more discerning interpreters of the Gospel - anointed the Lord with myrrh; the one, a long time before His Passion; the other, a few days before. One was a harlot and sinner; the other, chaste and virtuous. The Church commemorates this reverent act today. While mentioning herein the person of the harlot, it also mentions Judas’ betrayal; for, according to the account in Matthew, both of these deeds took place two days before the Passover, on Wednesday.

That woman, then, anointed Jesus’ head and feet with very precious myrrh, and wiped them with the tresses of her hair. The disciples, especially the avaricious Judas, were scandalized, supposedly because of the waste of the myrrh, which could be sold for a great price and given to the poor. The Lord Jesus reproved them and told them not to trouble the woman. Indignant, Judas went to the high priests, who were gathered in the court of Caiaphas and were already taking counsel against Jesus. On agreeing with them to betray his Teacher for thirty pieces of silver, Judas sought from that time opportunity to betray Him (Matt. 26:14-16).

Because the betrayal took place on Wednesday, we have received the tradition from Apostolic times to fast on Wednesday throughout the year.” - Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America

Because Jesus is the Bridegroom, He can be wounded if you take up self-chosen crosses, choosing the way of poverty and resolving to make sacrifices simply for ascetic reasons. Certainly He wants you to follow Him on the way of the cross. But His heart is filled with grief and sorrow if it is not love that impels you. You should not take the way of the cross for your own sanctification, but rather - as He repeatedly said while He was on earth - “For My sake you should lose your life, for My sake you should forsake houses, brethren . . .” Out of love for Him, out of love alone you should choose obedience, lowliness, humility and disgrace. Only the dedication which springs from love will make Him happy. Indeed, this is the only dedication which He will accept. Nothing else. All else is insufficient. Anything else would be more likely to wound Him, because it is simply pious deceit; we seem to be going His way, but it is really for our own sake. - Mother Basilea Sclink

It’s just a kiss away…

More on Spy Wednesday

Reading today’s Gospel, the lyrics, “It’s just a kiss away” from the Rolling Stone’s song, “Gimme Shelter” inappropriately came to mind…Spy Wednesday, Judas asks the chief priests, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” - Matthew 26

These are dark readings, revealing the capability for evil in men’s hearts - hidden beneath the guise of virtue.  The rapacious grasp for power, insatiable greed, exploitation of another to stabilize one’s status, to secure one’s wealth, and destroy anyone who stands in the way.

“‘Denounce! let us denounce him!’  All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine.  ‘Perhaps he will be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him.’” - Jeremiah 20: 10

“In God I trust, I shall not fear:  What can mortal man do to me?

All day long they distort my words, all their thought is to harm me.  They band together in ambush, track me down and seek my life.” - Psalm 56

Yet, “Jesus walked in peace through the midst of them.” - Luke 4: 30
