Was Jesus a Trad?
Posted by Terry Nelson on Apr 9th, 2007
Jesus must have been a traditionalist. In his homily for Holy Thursday, Pope Benedict observed that Our Lord may have been following the liturgical calendar of the Essenes for the observance of Passover instead of the newer calendar of the Jewish Priesthood in Jerusalem at the time. Perhaps explaining why the Seder (Last Supper) took place on Thursday instead of Friday. Read the article “Pope links Jesus to the Essenes“.
It may also make PETA people happy to know that the Holy Father said he probably didn’t have lamb either, since Jesus himself was the lamb. (Also, the Essenes did not perform animal sacrifice.)

Jesus was the rad trad of all trads. Who else could get away with calling sinners “brood of vipers”? :}}}

Only Jesus could call folks “brood of vipers”? Ooops.

Being somewhat of a history geek, I’ve wondered about the “timetable” of the Passion for some time.
The Essene argument comes close to answering it. Also the question of “Great Sabbaths” and “Minor Sabbaths.”
I wonder how, if the Last Supper was on Thursday Evening, and Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gesthemane after that, then interrogated, then tried by the Sanhedrin after dawn Friday, then brought to Pilate, then to Herod, then back to Pilate and condemned, then scourged and made to carry his crucifix to Calvary, all before noon on Friday morning?
I can’t imagine that a Roman Procurator or a Hebrew King would be up early on Friday morning.
Some say that using the Essene calendar, the Passover Meal held by Jesus may have been held on Tuesday or Wednesday that year.
Any thoughts?

The Jewish king Herod was up all night partying - after all, it was a holiday, and Pilate maybe got up early to work out - or more likely he was awakened because of the rucous, which made him rather irritable. Everything happened in quick succesion to avoid profaning the Passover observance and the Sabbath. It could happen - remember the OJ timeline…

Wouldn’t it be nice if government always worked that quickly when we apply for licenses or jobs or . . . ?
