It was the custom in Italian (Neapolitan) families to go to the waters on the feast of the Assunta. Entire families would wade into Long Island Sound in honor of the Madonna. August 15th was the day for the blessing of the waters and it was believed that the Madonna herself descended to sanctify them with heavenly virtue.
I remember seeing a documentary about a Greek Orthodox tradition– the throwing of a silver or gold cross into a bay and young men dive to retrieve it. Don’t remember what the “reward” was. I wonder if that, too, is in honor of the BVM.
