The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

September 14
Though a feast day, many monastic communities today begin the great monastic fast from now until Easter. Carthusians, who observe a perpetual abstinence from meat, also abstain from eggs and dairy product from this date until Easter.

Terry: Thanks, I did not know that.

Terry, A bit off topic but I just got the “catalog” in the mail and it appears they took your advice and the catalog cover looks better than the last one with the “stamp” look. This one has a black and white photo of the inside of a cathedral in the background.
I like the art work you post. Perhaps you could comment on the art. Sometimes I am not sure I get what the art is trying to convey and how it relates to your post or whether it should. For example the art from the hyperbole post.

Roma - Thanks for the comment. I got the catalog too. It is better, especially the inside pages, layout and adjacencies, etc. From what I understand they had professional help this time since their IT person resigned. So that may explain it. I think the cover is okay - layout misses a bit though.
The art for Hyperbole was just to illustrate the chasm between the rich man and Lazarus, which I refer to in the post. I’ll try to post more descriptions of the art and photos when it’s not obvious for the reader.

I did not know this either. And interstingly, this date corresponds with the beginning of the fasting month of Ramadan for the Muslims this year. (Must be some grace in this coincidence, somehow, somewhere.)
I am wondering that if the monks begin their fast now, that means they are fasting still during the great feast days of the Nativity? Or do they take a break from their fasts for Christmas and Ephiphany?

Thank you God for redeeming the world through your most holy Cross. God bless the Carthusians who are indeed my favorite order. Amen+
