Holy Toledo!

Jeffrey Smith of Roving Medievalist is putting on a great show as usual on his blog. Today he posted a painting (shown above) from the Church of St. Patrick in Toledo, Ohio. It depicts our own Bishop John Ireland of St. Paul officiating at the dedication of the same church in 1901. (I write from Minneapolis/St. Paul - hence the significance.)

That is an amazing church. Our young people would do much better in such surroundings. I hate the new churchs. Ugly, ugly, ugly!

I took three pictures of the painting to be sure I’d get a good one, then fiddled with it to cut out the frame. Still can’t believe it turned out that well.
Archbishop Ireland originally said he couldn’t be there, but Fr. Hannin, pastor of the church since the 1860’s got everyone up to the mayor to write to him asking him to change his mind.
Hannin was in his 70’s, but he collaborated on designing the church and micromanaged every step of the building. ( He was a trained engineer. )
After the response to those posts, I’ll post more pictures of St. Patrick’s and other Toledo churches.

Jeffrey - You are a splendid archivist, documentarian, and historian. Thanks for this photo.
