Carthusian-like.

The Monastic Community of Bethlehem.
The photo above is of two Sisters of Bethlehem. They wear a veil beneath the cowl, but adopted the male Carthusian habit. Their life is very Carthusian, each professed nun has her own hermitage wherein the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. Their monastic observance pretty much combines both East and West, while the Mass is a very reverent Novus Ordo. To find anything on the internet about the community is very difficult, but go here to learn more about them. (For Kat - In addition to foundations all over Europe, they also have one in the United States.)

I don’t get how they wear the Carthusian men’s habits and live a Carthusian charism but aren’t Carthusian?? The Carthusian sisters wear a very different habit than this…I’m confused. Can you tell us more Terry?

sanctus,
they do not live a carthusian charism and are not connected with the Carthusian order. they have their own unique charism and even their monastic life style differs from the carthusians (no mid night office, use of the venacular in the liturgy, allowing lay people to come for retreats, certain emphasis on eucharistic adoration etc)
because their monastic life puts a certain emphasis on the solitary aspect (rather than the communal aspect as in benedictines and trappists) the church has recognised their charism is under the spiritual paternity of St Bruno. this is why they wear the scapular of St Bruno not as a sing of any carthusian connection but under his paternity of those who follow a more solitary and desert spiritualiy.
not sure if that helps!
