The Blessed Angela of Foligno

Posted by Terry Nelson on Jan 3rd, 2008

Today is the eve of her feast.

Blessed Angela is known as a penitent, yet we are not privy to what her sins, which demanded such penance, actually were.  Some say gossip or calumny, I don’t think anyone knows that for certain.  Because of her great penitence, I think it was something else, something more ’sinister’, if you will.  Not infidelity or promiscuous behavior.  I think it may have something to do with child-bearing, since she lost her entire family; mother, children, husband - one by one - in the process of her conversion.   I have always had the strongest intuition her sin may have had something to do with contraception or abortion.  I can’t know  that however - and I am just speculating of course.  Regardless, it was her ardent love expressed in penitence for which she is venerated as a saint, not her sins, nor the mystical revelations she experienced after her conversion.
