Let’s do Lent.

You’re gonna die!
Ash Wednesday is all about death you know - yeah, that’s pretty much what the ashes signify. Well repentance and penance too, but it’s really about death. So if people on the street look at you funny because you have ashes on your forehead, just look at them real crazy and shout; “We’re all gonna die!” Smile, and keep on walking. (Keep that smile, because you don’t want people to know you are fasting… and yet we keep the ashes on all day? All righty then - let’s do Lent!)
Meménto, homo, quia pulvis es, et in púlverem revertéris
.
.
(Arthur, in this case “homo” just refers to “man” - it has nothing to do with the gays. ;) )

You’re not supposed to make me smile on Ash Wed. It’s all about doom and gloom, isn’t it?

After leaving the Mass at the Cathedral today I turned on the radio and there was a song playing that had such a Lenten overtone that I thought it was odd for this particular station to be playing.
I found out the composer/singer is Michael McDermott (Chgo) whose songs are “redolent with Joyce-ian Irish Catholic imagery of saints, sinners … etc.” Well, the song delighted me … so I had a smile—no doom & gloom— … one of the lines sung was “dance with me on the ashes” … I hope to do that one day …
blessed Lent!
