The feast of the Visitation.

Posted by Terry Nelson on May 31st, 2008

Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces.

Today used to be known as the feast of Mary, Mediatrix, although during the reign of Pius XII,  it became the feast of the Queenship of Mary.  After the Council, when the liturgical calendar was reformed, the 31 of May became the feast of the Visitation.

Our Lady had been chosen Mother of Christ “in order that she might become a partner in the redemption of the human race”.

Whoever, therefore, reverences the Queen of heaven and earth — and let no one consider himself exempt from this tribute of a grateful and loving soul — let him invoke the most effective of Queens, the Mediatrix of peace; let him respect and preserve peace, which is not wickedness unpunished nor freedom without restraint, but a well-ordered harmony under the rule of the will of God; to its safeguarding and growth the gentle urgings and commands of the Virgin Mary impel us. - Ad Caeli Reginam - Pius XII

Thus we see, that the understanding of Our Lady as Mediatrix, Co-Redemptrix, and Advocate is not a new development in Mariology, but has been accepted by the Church for centuries, and often referenced by the popes.  I believe St. Alphonsus Liguori, as well as many other saints, often referred to Our Lady using these titles.

Protestant influences.

Of course the Protestant reformation attempted to do away with these notions, emphasizing Christ as the one Mediator, Redeemer, and Advocate before the Father - which indeed He is.  Therefore, as some say, Vatican II, in order to appease Protestant sensitivities, avoided any emphasis upon these venerable titles of Our Lady.

In the United States especially, where the Catholic Church and the faithful have been contaminated by Protestant thought, these attributes are greatly misunderstood.

Where is it in the Bible?

However, if one meditates today’s Gospel, one can see how fitting these titles are for the Blessed Virgin.  As the Mother of God, she carried in her womb, as in a tabernacle, the God-man.  Her visit to Elizabeth served the Divine plan in so far as - through her mediation - she brought the Son of God to the infant John, while yet enclosed in the womb of his mother, whereby he was sanctified through the merits of Jesus Christ.  Just so, if one considers the Gospel of the wedding at Cana, one also witnesses how the Mother of God, Mother of Divine Grace, exercises her privilege as mediatrix when she tells Our Lord, “They have no wine.”  Our Lord responds by dispensing wine (Grace) in abundance.

Considering the erosion of traditional Catholic faith and devotion, it seems to me the time has come that these things concerning the role of the Mother of God in our salvation may be officially defined and explained by the Sacred Magisterium of the Church.  Several Bishops and Cardinals  are currently asking that this role of Our Lady be defined as dogma, as have many of the laity.

Prayer for priests.

Posted by Terry Nelson on May 30th, 2008

“Come to me all of you who are weary and find life burdensome.”

Today’s feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has been designated the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests.  Father Mark has the most edifying meditations for this day, an excerpt here:

“The holiness to which I call my priests, the holiness to which I am calling you, consists in a total configuration to me as I stand before my Father in the heavenly sanctuary, beyond the veil. Every priest of mine is to be with me both priest and victim in the presence of my Father. Every priest is called to stand before the altar with pierced hands and feet, with his side wounded, and with his head crowned as my head was crowned in my passion. You needn’t fear this configuration to me; it will bring you only peace of heart, joy in the presence of my Father, and that unique intimacy with me that I have, from the night before I suffered, reserved for my priests, my chosen ones, the friends of my Heart.” - Words of Our Lord

World Day of Prayer for priests.

A Priest’s Priest.

“Saint Peter Julian’s Eucharistic vocation unfolded amidst sufferings of the heart and painful detachments. God called him out of the religious family he loved, the Marist Fathers, to begin a new work, a Cenacle entirely devoted to the Blessed Sacrament. From the beginning this new Eucharistic work comprised priests, consecrated women, and laity. He challenged his little family of adorers to set souls ablaze with Eucharistic fire. For Peter Julian, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament had an apostolic dimension. He reached out, in particular, to poor adolescents and adults who, for one reason or another, had not received their First Holy-Communion, and to “fallen priests,” those unfortunate priests who, out of weakness, found themselves cut off and living in a state of spiritual, emotional, and often material, misery. The very same needs exist today, one hundred-fifty years later.

The number of baptized Catholics who have never received their First Holy Communion is staggering. Who will reach out to them? Who will take them by the hand and lead them to the altar? The preparation of young people and adults for their First Confession and Holy Communion is an urgent work, and one that the Heart of Jesus burns to see carried out.

And what of so many “fallen priests” cast aside, and living in dejection with no one to care for them spiritually? Saint Peter Julian understood that Our Lord was asking him to minister to troubled priests and guide them back to the altar, that is, to spiritual health and to holiness. Jeremiah’s prophecy holds out a series of consoling promises for priests who have fallen: “If you return I will restore you, and you shall stand beforeme. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall be as my mouth” (Jeremiah 15:19). In the Blessed Sacrament Saint Peter Julian Eymard recognized “the treasure hidden in the field” (Matthew 13:44) and “the pearl of great price”(Matthew 13:46). He gave up all that he had to possess the mystery of the Eucharist and to be possessed by it. Peter Julian Eymard is a saint for the Church today: a Church called to rediscover Eucharistic adoration and to live “from the altar and for the altar”; a Church that will be incomplete so long as so many of the baptized are not receiving the Sacred Body and Precious Blood of Christ; a Church suffering in priests who broken and wounded with no one to care for their souls. Saint Peter Julian, share with us your passion for the Eucharist, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ!” -Don Marco

Please do pray for all of our priests today and every day. We need to try not to be too severe in our judgements regarding those who have gone astray. I have met some priests no longer living their priesthood, while sometimes neglecting even the duties of a Catholic life.  They too need our prayers.  While living in Boston I met an alcoholic former Jesuit who always asked for money, he was homeless, and his eyes often filled with tears as he spoke about his alienation and lonely exile from the Church and his vocation.

World day of Prayer For the Sanctification of Priests.

A monk-priest prays for his brothers.

Fr. Mark has a series of posts concerning the sanctification of priests, and the following is an excerpt from his latest post suggesting devotions for the observance of the The World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests that will be observed tomorrow, Friday, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus:

Sursum Corda

Given all the demoralizing and cranky rants about priests that float through the blogosphere, I find it more than ever necessary to point to models of priestly virtue and holiness. I am a great believer in visiting each day a gallery of heavenly heroes. Sursum corda! Hearts on high! This is one of the reasons why holy priests like Padre Leopoldo Pastori, Saint Peter Julian Eymard, Saint Gaetano Catanoso, Saint Théophane Vénard, Saint Claude La Colombière, and others, so often figure prominenty on Vultus Christi.

The Offering of Little Souls

Precious few in the Church are given the incisive and prophetic charisms of a Saint Peter Damian or of a Fra Girolamo Savonarola. All the members of Christ’s Body are, however, called to a life of Eucharistic oblation: “And now, brethren, I appeal to you by God’s mercies to offer up your bodies as a living sacrifice, consecrated to God and worthy of his acceptance” (Romans 12:1). Even “little souls,” hidden in the humdrum activities of ordinary life, can offer themselves quietly but effectively for the sanctification of priests; for the deliverance of priests oppressed by the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil; for the refreshment of priests grown weary in their service; for the conversion of priests who may have compromised with sin. - Priests

Excerpts from the official letter:

Pope St Pius X said: “Every priestly vocation comes from the heart of God but passes through the heart of a mother”. This is true with regard to obvious biological motherhood but it is also true of the “birth” of every form of fidelity to the Vocation of Christ. We cannot do without a spiritual motherhood for our priestly life: let us entrust ourselves confidently to the prayer of the whole of Holy Mother Church, to the motherhood of the People, whose pastors we are but to whom are entrusted our custody and holiness; let us ask for this fundamental support.

Dear confreres, the urgent need for “a movement of prayer, placing 24-hour continuous Eucharistic adoration at the centre so that a prayer of adoration, thanksgiving, praise, petition and reparation will be raised to God, incessantly and from every corner of the earth, with the primary intention of awakening a sufficient number of holy vocations to the priestly state and, at the same time, spiritually uniting with a certain spiritual maternity — at the level of the Mystical Body — all those who have already been called to the ministerial priesthood and are ontologically conformed to the one High and Eternal Priest. This movement will offer better service to Christ and his brothers — those who are at once ‘inside’ the Church and also ‘at the forefront’ of the Church, standing in Christ’s stead (cf. “Pastores Dabo Vobis,” No. 16), and representing him as head, shepherd and spouse of the Church” - Cardinal Cláudio Hummes

A prayer from Blessed Mary of Jesus Crucified, OCD

“Holy Spirit, inspire me.

 Love of God consume me.

Along the true road, lead me.

Mary, my good mother, look down upon me.

 With Jesus, bless me.

From all evil, all illusion, all danger, preserve me.”

One must be ever so careful in the spiritual life.

Thoughts from Jacq…

Jacques Fesch.

The Servant of God wrote: (to the monk who befriended him in prison)

“You are right little brother when you say, ‘I know Satan is prowling around you…’ How he must gloat at the sight of my impressionable soul, which can’t possibly rise above itself without the help of extraordinary divine gifts. I have no strength, I lack the charity which would soften my heart, and I do not possess the gift of wisdom; but I believe that at this painful time the Lord has given me that gift of understanding ‘which enlightens us with its keen rays, and gives us certitude regarding the true meaning of the Word of God.’

Despite all my rebellion and lack of zeal and emthusiasm for a life of communion with God, I know with absolute certainty that I am surrounded by grace and love and the the Lord wants to save me in spite of myself. Fiat, Lord! You know me, and you know I am incapable of saving myself without your constant help. But this will of mine which says Fiattoday will say tomorrow, ‘Take your hand away from me - for I am suffocating.’

There is still a good deal of rancor in my soul, which of course stems from pride and leads me to do things I regret. Do you know, sometimes I think, in good faith and with horror, that the only way I can be saved is perhaps not to be saved in the human sense of the word?” (Editor’s note: I believe he is referring to his execution which had gone through various appeals. However he accepted his sentence as justice, in peace, and died a holy death.) He finished by writing, “Confidence, confidence, little brother!…

In three days it will be Pentecost, little brother. May the Lord make me understand a little more deply the wonder of his love. If I could make a wish, it would be that I might be able to appreciate more completely the fact that all that is happening to me comes from His mercy, and that if I am to be rejected and discarded by men it is because the Lord wants to give me the greatest of all goods; glory in the risen Christ.” -Jacques Fesch, “Light Over the Scaffold, Letters of Jacques Fesch and Cell 18″ - Mother Mary Thomas Noble, translator.

Some of the things people do in hell.

Surprisingly, some of the same things they do in life.

They wail and grind their teeth. (Matthew 24:51)

They scoff, they mock, they wag their heads, like ravening and roaring lions.  (Psalm 22:8,14)

I’m told it is not a very hospitable place.

In the form of a question.

Several people have commented on a couple of my posts dealing with the Church’s regulations regarding the ordination of homosexuals, while some have emailed me asking questions such as these:

“Why would God call a gay man to the priesthood, only to be rejected by the Church who tells him no?”  Or, “What about gay men who are already ordained - how can they be priests if the Church says no?”

Very interesting.

Of course the answers to these questions are way beyond my competence.  (I only have opinions.)  However, concerning the subject of the sacrament of Holy Orders as it applies to gay men, a friend sent me this:

Simply because a homosexual person is ordained, it doesn’t necessarily mean the“ordination is a guarantee of a Divine call. Ordination does not require some divine confirmation of a call before the Bishop can extend a laying on of hands, it requires only a male, and the correct form of the sacrament. Even if one is forbidden by law, ordination is one of those sacraments that works ex opere operato* (by the fact of it being worked), just like the Eucharist.  So, just because one is a priest does not mean he has been called.  Why are these gay men priests? I don’t know. Is it possible some with tendenceis that aren’t deeply rooted are in fact called? Sure. Is it absolutely the case? Certainly not.”  (Thanks Dr. Phil!)

Makes sense to me.  (And no sister - it doesn’t work for you because you are not a male.  Women are not admitted to the seminary nor can they be ordained priests.)

*1128 This is the meaning of the Church’s affirmation49 that the sacraments act ex opere operato (literally: “by the very fact of the action’s being performed”), i.e., by virtue of the saving work of Christ, accomplished once for all. It follows that “the sacrament is not wrought by the righteousness of either the celebrant or the recipient, but by the power of God.”50 From the moment that a sacrament is celebrated in accordance with the intention of the Church, the power of Christ and his Spirit acts in and through it, independently of the personal holiness of the minister. Nevertheless, the fruits of the sacraments also depend on the disposition of the one who receives them. - CCC

Philip Neri

The Apostle of Rome

Pictured above is St. Philip Neri in ecstasy.

SOME THOUGHTS ON LOVE AND ECSTASY FROM JOHN OF THE CROSS:

“Once when being asked how one becomes enraptured, the Venerable Fray John of the Cross replied: by denying one’s own will and doing the will of God; for ecstasy is nothing else than going out of self and being caught up in God; and this is what he who obeys does; he leaves himself and his desire, and thus unburdened plunges himself in God”

“Love consists not in feeling great things but in having detachment and in suffering for the Beloved.”

I think these things are better than any levitation or vision.
