The Apostle of Rome

Pictured above is St. Philip Neri in ecstasy.

SOME THOUGHTS ON LOVE AND ECSTASY FROM JOHN OF THE CROSS:

“Once when being asked how one becomes enraptured, the Venerable Fray John of the Cross replied: by denying one’s own will and doing the will of God; for ecstasy is nothing else than going out of self and being caught up in God; and this is what he who obeys does; he leaves himself and his desire, and thus unburdened plunges himself in God”

“Love consists not in feeling great things but in having detachment and in suffering for the Beloved.”

I think these things are better than any levitation or vision.

I have read that St. Philip Neri took himself very lightly (but God very seriously) and had a well-developed sense of humor.

Melody - that is an excellent way to explain him, and an ideal pattern for us to emulate:

He took himself very lightly, but God very seriously.

Very good advice. Thanks for that gem!
