Why do people mock the Holy Father?

Secular press calls the Holy Father the biggest homophobe on the planet

And yet uber-Catholics post photos like this inviting irreverent and sophomoric comments and captions.  How very, very sad.  Sad, sad, sad - to see unemployed people wasting their vocation and academic achievements on such nonsensical theatrics.

The anti-Church faction has been using this tactic since the time of the French Revolution. Mock and ridicule. Queen Marie Antoinette and the statement imposed on her by the popular literature (the press) of the time “Let them eat cake”. Nobody cared if she really said those words or not.

Same applies today, “the press” is running the show and many bloggers, instead of using the medium as a means of free speech acts as surrogates for the biased press.

The secular governments and the “free press” hate the Church, this is a reality of our times. this is the world in which we must work out our salvation.

Freedom of speech, does this really exist if one’s words are lost in the torrent of background noise and the only audible statements are those backed by money and power?

    I agree.
It isn’t funny to laugh at the Holy Father in any form, especially by adults on a public forum.
He is a dignified priest of Jesus Christ, who, at 82, fills his day with work, for US! The man is a dear scholar of the old school, a shy, gentle soul, the successor to St. Peter—and to see him laughed at…..sad.
    I hope it is stopped.

Protestants have no respect for him. Some think that he may be the Antichrist. At the very least he sits on the seat of the Antichrist. The Bayside people think he has been an inmposter. The Jews think that the Pope and the Catholic church are out to get them.Do the Muslims like anyone that is not a Muslim? Catholics are a rebelious bunch of bratty children that refuse parental authority ,and they pick ,and choose which rules if any to follow. Catholics that do follow the Pope are suck ups, brown nosing zealots, in other words nuts, like me. Why hasn’t the church divided into two parts by now, the liberals ,and the conservatives? Why don’t liberals leave ,and find some group that they enjoy better? Catholics confuse me. Hey what IS a convert to think of the Pope ,and his church ?

Our Holy Father is Jesus’ personal representative on earth–so “bashing” our Holy Father is exactly like “bashing” Jesus! When they die, and stand before Jesus–how are they going to answer for that one?!

Remember when you asked me to tell you if I knew who you were talking about in your posts?

Just a random thought-or is it?

    ROFL!

For Heaven’s sakes, you guys - have you seen the blog?

It was all good-natured, affectionate, and respectful fun, and was not mocking the Holy Father in any way.

(I assume this is referring to the blog of a priest whose last name starts with the letter “Z.” If not, please disregard this post!)

Whatever. Helena Handbasket and all that.

  8. Terry Nelson Says:

Leo - it was your response and Susan’s that kept this post up - both of your insights helped me understand the importance of keeping a proper decorum and respect for the Holy Father even when the “ribbing” is supposed to be good-natured and fun.

    Thanks.

I could not agree with you more Terry! Such activities are tasteless and really quite stupid. Is the Holy Father just another person we can just make sarcastic idiotic comments about? I really wish it would stop. I find the whole thing repulsive.

The Holy Father is NOT a celebrity like Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, and Courtney Cox. Such comments are not fitting for the dignity of his office. People should listen to what he is saying instead of making idiotic snide comments about his Holiness.

I must say that I was somewhat surprised to discover who the culprit was. A direction I did not anticipate. I had thought the “usual suspects” were up to their old tricks. Maybe not so much surprised but now concerned. Will that blog too end in tears? The recent demise of certain notorious blogs serve a cautionary tale.

Pride goeth before a fall. As I said, Helena Handbasket.

I still do not see how the weblog in question was mocking Pope Benedict or disrespectful to him in any manner. And, Leo, it is not remotely comparable to the postings of a certain G.A., who appears to have publicly turned his back on his faith.

I usually agree with Terry’s (veiled!) comments about other blogs, but not this time.

  12. sf Says:

Compromise: Let the blogger post his own picture and invite commentary.
