Explicit Russian threats.
“Poland and the United States struck a deal on Thursday to deepen military ties and place a missile interceptor base in Poland.
Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the Russian general staff told reporters Friday that the agreement exacerbates U.S.-Russian relations that are already tense because of fighting between Georgian and Russian forces. He said the deal “cannot go unpunished.”
“Poland, by deploying (the system) is exposing itself to a strike — 100 percent,” Interfax quoted Nogovitsyn as saying. - Source
At Fatima Our Lady said:
If my requests are granted, Russia will be converted and there will be peace. If not, she will scatter her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecution of the Church. - Source
Go to confession and pray the rosary. Happy feast of the Assumption, and remember it is a holy day of obligation.

In seven and a half years of the Bush presidency, I can think of only two smart things that he has done: two Supreme Court appointments.
While ending abortion is indeed at the head of the “unnegotiable list” of political platform planks, there are other issues that are important to those of us who are considered about the fate of the United States.
National Defense is certain near the top of the list.
Using false pretenses of the existence of “weapons of mass destruction” as a ploy to attack Iraq, doing that with no plans for an occupation and then continuing the second war with Afghanistan, a guerrilla war not unlike the early years of Vietnam, one wonders what military expertise our ex-National Guard pilot president has.
Now, he is deliberately provoking Russia by placing U.S. missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic, two countries with justifiable grudges against Russia after 45 years of occupation. They also have little experience of power Politics.
If Poland thinks the U.S. will support them in a conflict with Russia like England did in 1939, they’d better think again.
We went ballistic in 1962 when the Soviets attempted to place missiles in Cuba. Does he not think Russia will do the same?
The entire history of Russia’s relations with the western European countries is one of paranoia. They will not stand for those missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic.
So now Bush is warning Russia not to mess around with the country of Georgia, a former province of the Soviet Union. Are we prepared to intervene? Or are we just posturing like we did with Hungary in 1956?
In 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Doomsday Clock of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists stood at 17 minutes to midnight. In 2007, it was 5 minutes to midnight. It has not been updated since, but I’m sure it much closer.
Have your children registered for the draft? Does your bomb shelter still have its supplies?
The news today is as bad as I have ever heard it in terms of Russian U.S. relations.
As Terry said in his post, “Go to confession and pray the rosary.”

I’m following in disbelief.
Time to pull out Caryll Houselander’s writings from WWII. Christ’s passion continues throughout the world in the suffering of human souls.

Ray - great insights - especially the Cuban crisis in ‘62.

I just recalled after reading Ray that Pat Buchanan has warned of this for years and I never understood him.
I did a google search on him and his latest article, very interesting:

Thanks, Terry.
Thanks even more, sf. That Buchanan piece is really great and reminded me of much more hypocrisy in our foreign policy.
We are really playing with fire. And I don’t think Bush and his Secretary of State have a clue.

My red neck translation from Our blessed Mother,
Our ass is grass ,and God is the lawn mower.
Please don’t yell at me. Though I probably deserve it. I know how extremely serious this is.

The seriousness of the Russian situation can hardly be underestimated. Those of us who grew up during the Cold War remember well the Cuban Missile Crisis, the invasion of Prague.
Here is what was said at Rianjo August 1931 to Sister Lucia by Our Lady of Fatima:
“They did not want to listen to my request! Like the King of France, they will repent, and they will do it, but it will be too late. Russia will have already spread its errors in the world, causing wars and persecutions against the Church. The Holy Father will greatly suffer.”"
What happened to the King of France? Well, read the blog “Tea at Trianon” to find out.
I am afraid my dear friends the Consecration has been too late and the errors are already too widespread.
Now, on another note, does it not seem odd that the death of Alexsander Sozhenytsin is coincidental with this crisis?

Cold war Leo? I am too young to know what you are talking about.
Sure is getting chilly again !
