Memories

Posted by Terry Nelson on Aug 20th, 2008

This morning at Mass…

I was thinking that after most of us are dead, no one will remember us.  If a person has children, their descendants may remember them for a few generations, but that’s all.  Popular people, like Madonna, Michael Phelps, may be remembered for decades, but eventually they will be forgotten too.  Although the average person will disappear entirely - no one will ever know we existed…  And yet many of us think we are quite important people.

We should probably pray more for the souls in purgatory.

I was thinking the same exact thing last night. After grandkids, or greatgrandkids die out no one remembers you. You’re just an anonymous name on one of your descendents Family Tree presentations in grade school.

You mean our blogs won’t make us immortal?

Ah, But Mr. Terry, Saints, and assholes are remembered forever.

I had gone to Buster Keatons film festival last fall ,and it made me so sad because even after a handful of decades, famous people dont seem to matter very much either. (Except to his lovely grand daughter Melissa Talmage, who I could swear is going to be a saint .Google her)

I had learned 3 things from this gathering.

    1) What I do is damned important, and that a rich or famous life doesn’t necessarily mean a better life, not better in quality or in overall satisfaction.(Just better stuff) American’s vision of success is skewed.
A successful life to me means that each family member knows that they were wanted ,and loved ,by Mom, Dad siblings, and Most of all by God. That’s as good as it gets. ,and some people don’t even get that.

    2) Money can come and go rather quickly. Buster became a multi millionaire from selling 10c movie tickets. His home was the italian villa in the God father movie, yet after a messy divorce ,and a wife that couldn’t even stay on an extravagant budget , Buster was forced to live in a camper.
Lesson here, money is simply a tool , everyone has a budget, everyone can’t have everything that they want ,and everything can be taken away in a blink of an eye.

    3) All of us , the rich who seem to have it all, the poor who struggle , the famous, the beautiful people, the lowly homemakers (me !) the class clowns ,the smarty pants (you!) the handicapped, or the beggars, are all just trying to get through this life the best that they can, and we all need to pray for each other, and in the end it is only God that we are trying to impress. If he is the only one that remembers, or even likes me then I will be enormously satisfied.

I told God that I would always pray for a famous person plus 10 audience members.

You pray for the poor souls, I will pray for mistreated children. Hum, a lot of people are still left out of the loop here.

Belinda - LOL! You have such a way with words - and yet you make such real points.

You have been so kind to me by allowing me to play with you ,and your friends on your blog.

I have been a Martha type (Yeah like Martha Stewart),all of my life, and now I want to become a Mary type. I want to sit around ,and read all that I can about Jesus ,and our church ,and his friends.

Oh , I wish that I would have gone to confession this week . The Russians are REALLY making me nervous.

I dont know if I should bulk up for the winter or get real buff .Hum for the short term who is better off, a fat person , or a physically strong person. I am really on the fence. I cant live off of muscle ,but I can live off of body fat. Hum .

“The unrighteous, but famous, slugs in the garden of life best watch for the blessed salt of the earth”

    well said.

Just stumbled here, and want to say thanks for the perspective. In the grand scheme of things, it’s all just a matter of ’stuff’ that we seem to give importance too during our often far too busy lives.

I’ll be praying more fervently now.

And, Belinda to you, I just say ‘Amen’.

Mr.Terry, This is the closest that I can get to viewing viewmasters on the net .(without 3D glasses) The reason why I am sharing this with you is because I always pray for their souls, and it is easier ,and more fun when I can put a face with a prayer.
