All-inclusive Liturgy

In 2008 C.E.
The following is perhaps the best description of post-modern Catholic liturgical funtions that I have ever read:
“Roger Cardinal Mahony of Los Angeles enters to preside Pharoah-like over his diocese 2008 Religious Education Congress. I find this type of thing fascinating. It is liturgy shaped not by Tradition but by set-designers, choreographers, costume designers, lighting engineers. It is liturgy broken loose from any constraints, designed for “modern man”, to give instant satisfaction, a feel good factor. It is Catholicism submerged in the best of Evangelical Protestant worship, Catholicism drawn to a liberal extreme.” - Fr. Ray Blake
Fr. Blake also posted the video on his blog. He noted, “Cardinal Mahoney’s liturgical style, actually makes me feel physically sick…” I don’t like it either. View it here.

Given that this was a Religious Education Congress I, B.RE holder and former children’s minister of not a few years (protestant) have to wonder about the actual state of religious eduction in Cardinal Baloney’s diocese and I don’t mind saying that I am not infrequently embarrassed by many members of Church I gave up my pay cheque for. It’s not a joke when converts are warned that the local parish or diocese they become a part of may not look at all like the Church of the books that they fell in love with.

I try to think kind thoughts about the Cardinal. Maybe he’s just struggling, like Frodo Baggins.

I use to do this kind of religion in my bedroom ,when no one else was around long before it became fashionable. (I have always been ahead of the fashion curve)
I had the Wiccan books, and the ouiji board. The spells, and the games. (which do work by the way)
Can you guess who showed up to play with me ??
You stupid Catholic fools are playing an extremely dangerous game. One with eternal consequences.
Just like a good house paint that you want to adhere to the walls , you must get a real good primer, so that when you put the top coat on it will last for years. I see the beginning of a real fine base primer here so the new “united nations of religion sticks real well”
In my future I will be part of some poor Catholic group huddled in a corner, trying to worship Christ as he intended. It will be a lonely small group ,ridiculed ,and mocked , then persecuted. Maybe Father Kolbe will hang out with us.

Um, if the statue of Our Lady pictured here is supposed to be part of the “feel good factor”, I must be missing something; I’m not exactly getting the warm fuzzy vibes. It’s not a picture of someone I’d turn to in times of trouble.

Mr. Owen, I agree with you, and I am so frightened for their children, and for mine. When kids sit thorough this stuff they think that is normal procedure.
My brother has just decided to become Catholic church about 4 months ago ,and I was so worried about him getting involved with people like this.
I sent him this link ,and he said that he would have walked out of this service.
Funny that my brother ,and I are so ignorant of correct Catholic procedures yet the cradle Catholics are even more confused.
Hum ,or are they? Perhaps this IS their intention, they are no dummies, but why? Do they have an agenda? Something funny is going on.
Padre Pio would frown on me if I say bad things about Priests, I surely am on thin ice.

This is what the Catholic Church would look like as a production of the Lion King (Broadway).
Now even the movie version is ruined for me.

A blogging friend of mine left the following comment on my related post and I thought I’d shre it here: “In the early 70s I saw a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass.” As theater it was stunning. As liturgy it was…theater.” The complete quote is in my combox for Aug 21.

Dear Mr.Thom, I have been such a fool. I had borrowed from the library a video on how to be a Wiccan.
I did this so that when I meet them on the street I would recognize them.( I have met MANY ) with the intention to to evangelize to them.
I watched about 10 ish minutes of it ,and it made me sick. The women looked JUST like the women in this Mass. CREEPY!
Say does anyone know how to evangelize to a Catholic??

Dear Terry,
I am curious about the dating of the image. C.E. instead of A.D. why?

Kate - to stress the profane aspect of the “liturgical rites” depicted in the theatrical production Cardinal Mahoney presided over.
